SpaceX’s Starship Completes First Orbital Test Flight

by

Spaceflight

SpaceX’s fully integrated Starship and Super Heavy booster completed its first orbital test flight after multiple delays. The rocket lifted off from Starbase, Texas, reaching an altitude of 200 km before performing a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

This test marks a major milestone for SpaceX’s ambitions of interplanetary travel, including crewed missions to Mars. Starship’s reusable design aims to drastically reduce spaceflight costs. Despite some hardware losses during re-entry, SpaceX deemed the mission a success, gathering critical data for future flights.

NASA is closely monitoring Starship’s progress, as it is key to the Artemis Moon missions. The next test will focus on in-orbit refueling, a crucial step for deep-space missions.

“Starship is the vehicle that will enable humanity to become a multiplanet species.”

 — Elon Musk.
